The No. 15 Mizzou Tigers extended their winning streak to three games and picked up their ninth SEC victory with a statement 110-98 win over No. 4 Alabama on Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. The win not only handed the Crimson Tide their second straight loss but also marked the most points Missouri has ever scored in an SEC game.
Key Points:
- Historic Win: Mizzou’s victory gave them their third top-five win of the season, a feat the program has only accomplished once before, during the 1988-89 season.
- Tigers Shine: Mark Mitchell led the charge with a career-high 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting, while Caleb Grill notched his first double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
- Leveled Scoring: The Tigers had five players in double figures. Sophomore Anthony Robinson II added 14 points, Tamar Bates chipped in 13, and Tony Perkins finished with 10.
- Fast Start: Mizzou opened the game on a 12-0 run, forcing Alabama into three missed shots and two turnovers on its first five possessions.
- Turning Defense into Offense: The Tigers scored 15 points off 10 Alabama turnovers in the first half while shooting 60% from the field. They also attempted a season-high 47 free throws, converting 31.
- Frustrated Tide: Alabama’s Mark Sears poured in a season-high 35 points, but tensions ran high late in the first half when head coach Nate Oats received his first technical foul of the season after a flagrant foul call went against Sears.
- What They Said: “It was electric inside of Mizzou Arena, and our guys just continue to feed off of it,” Mizzou Head Coach Dennis Gates said postgame.
