Cardinals, Astros Continue Series
The St. Louis Cardinals go for their third straight win tonight when they take on the Houston Astros at Busch Stadium.
Erick Fedde makes the start for the Redbirds after pitching 6 no-hit innings in his last outing at Pittsburgh. The Astros give the ball to Hunter Brown, who has begun the season with three straight quality starts.
Cards Continue To Mash
The Cards put up 8 runs last night to continue their torrid offensive stretch to begin the season. Here are their MLB ranks as a team:
3rd in runs (5.6 per game)
1st in batting average (.287)
1st in on-base percentage (.353)
3rd in slugging percentage (.447)
2nd in OPS (.800)
Fedde looks to continue a hot run of Cardinals starting pitching over the last 6 games, but he’ll need to cut down on the walks. Fedde has walked four batters in each of his last two starts, and he has a 5/8 K-to-walk ratio on the season. That should improve - and it needs to if he plans to have a successful season.
Brown A Tough Customer
Brown has turned into a fantastic pitcher, as he has compiled a 2.45 ERA across his last 27 starts since the beginning of May 2024. The right-hander is coming off 6 shutout innings at Seattle in his last outing. Brown is a quality start machine, as he has put up a QS in 21 of his last 25 trips to the mound.
The Cardinals will have their hands full against Brown tonight, but they’ve had plenty of success against top pitchers this season having already beaten Paul Skenes, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, and now Framber Valdez last night.
My Lean
I don’t love anything in this game, but if I had to bet it, I’d take the over 7.5.
I trust the Cardinals’ offense against anyone at this point, and the over is 10-5-1 in their 16 games this season. I also think Brown is due for some type of regression, as he’s not going to have a 2.00 ERA all year long.
I am a little nervous about Fedde in this game, as that 5/8 K-to-walk ratio is very concerning. His ERA estimators suggest his ERA should be much worse than his current 4.20 mark, so he’s due to give up some runs as well.
The wind is also supposed to be blowing out to right field at about 10 MPH on a relatively comfortable weather night in St. Louis, so if you’re going to bet this one, I think the over is the play.
Lean: Over 7.5 at -108 on DraftKings
