The St. Louis Cardinals (14-19) were overpowered by the New York Mets (22-11) in a 9-3 loss Friday evening to open their three-game series at Busch Stadium. The Mets racked up 17 hits and have now won nine straight against the Cardinals, dating back to April 2024.

1st Inning 

Lars Nootbaar doubled to left and scored on Masyn Winn’s infield single, giving St. Louis an early 1-0 lead.

2nd Inning 

The Mets loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez each drove in a run with fielder’s choices, putting New York up 2-1.

3rd Inning 

Victor Scott II singled, advanced on a groundout, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Alvarez. Masyn Winn later crossed the plate on a Willson Contreras RBI single, regaining a 3-2 lead for the Cardinals.

5th Inning 

Pete Alonso launched a two-run homer after a Juan Soto double to put New York ahead 4-3. After back-to-back singles, Chris Roycroft entered in relief. A throwing error by Contreras allowed another run, followed by RBI singles from McNeil and Alvarez to extend the Mets’ lead to 7-3.

7th Inning 

Nimmo hit a solo homer and Alvarez added his third RBI of the night to make it 8-3.

9th Inning 

Ryan Helsley hit Tyrone Taylor, who later scored on Alvarez’s fourth RBI of the game. Luisangel Acuña added a sac fly to close out the scoring.
