CITY, Minnesota Clash In The Cup
St. Louis CITY SC and Minnesota United meet for the second time in less than a week when the two clubs battle in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at Allianz Field.
CITY got dominated 3-0 at Minnesota this past Saturday, but they’ll try to put that behind them with a chance to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of this tournament.
CITY Struggling Badly
CITY advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over USL League One side Union Omaha back on May 7th.
However, that is the only game CITY has won since March 15th. They are winless in their last ten MLS matches with seven losses and three draws. CITY has allowed two or more goals in each of their last five games and in seven of their last eight.
Minnesota Rolling Along
Minnesota United has won four of their last five games across all competitions. They currently reside in second place in the Western Conference in MLS play with a defense that has only been scored upon 13 times in 14 league games. Only two teams in the league have conceded fewer goals.
Minnesota advanced to this round of the U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 win over Louisville City back on May 7th while playing with a heavily rotated squad.
My Lean
Minnesota is only a -125 favorite in this game after being a -190 favorite against CITY this past Saturday. Those odds suggest we will see some rotation from Minnesota, but it’s hard to know just how many of their regulars will play - which makes it tough to bet on this game.
I would expect CITY to put their strongest squad on the field, as they need some positive momentum and this is likely their only chance to win anything of significance this season.
I’m not going to bet this game with so much uncertainty about who Minnesota is going to have on the pitch, but if forced to make a play, I’d have to go with Minnesota on the moneyline. Until CITY can show some improvement in their play, there is no way I can bet on them - in particular on the road where they have four losses and one draw in their last five matches.
Lean: Minnesota United on the moneyline at -125 on DraftKings
