Cardinals Comeback Falls Short in 5-4 Loss to Tigers

The St. Louis Cardinals (27-22) came up just short Tuesday night, losing 5-4 to the Detroit Tigers (32-17) after a late ninth-inning rally. Despite clawing back from a 4-0 deficit, the Cardinals couldn't hold off a late push led by Riley Greene, who tallied four RBIs and launched a third-inning homer.

STL: Erick Fedde (3-3, 3.77 ERA) – 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 0 BB 

DET: Tarik Skubal (4-2, 2.87 ERA) – 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 1 BB

Scoring Summary

1st Inning 

Detroit jumped ahead quickly. Kerry Carpenter led off with a solo homer to right, and Zach McKinstry doubled and later scored on a Riley Greene RBI single, making it an early 2-0 lead for the Tigers.

3rd Inning 

Gleyber Torres singled and came around on Greene’s two-run shot to right field, extending the Tigers’ lead to 4-0.

5th Inning 

The Cardinals responded as Iván Herrera singled and was driven in on Nolan Arenado’s two-run blast to left, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

6th Inning 

Masyn Winn reached on an infield single, advanced on a balk and groundout and came around to score on Herrera’s second single of the night, trimming it to 4-3.

7th Inning 

Victor Scott II doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Winn’s sacrifice fly, tying the game at 4-4.

9th Inning 

Kyle Leahy surrendered a leadoff single, followed by a Greene double that drove in McKinstry to give Detroit a 5-4 lead. 

The Cardinals went down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game.

Stats & Notes

The Cardinals have won 13 of their last 16 games, with all three losses coming by one run. They're now 7-8 in one-run contests.

Kyle Leahy allowed his first run in 14 innings (10 appearances).

Iván Herrera extended his hitting streak to 10 games (2-for-4, RBI, R).

Nolan Arenado’s 5th-inning home run was his 111th as a Cardinal, tying Scott Rolen for 22nd in franchise history.

St. Louis now sits two games behind the division-leading Cubs, who battered the Marlins Tuesday night.
