The St. Louis Cardinals announced a contract extension for manager Oliver Marmol, through 2028 with a club option for 2029, on Sunday morning. While some fans are unhappy with the decision to buy into Marmol in the future, primarily with the prospect of Yadier Molina or Albert Pujols taking over the role down the road, this is a smart move for the direction of the franchise.
While Molina and Pujols are beloved members of the Cardinals' past, and both are great baseball minds, showcasing that in their short managerial tenures, both were selected by their home country, Molina with Puerto Rico and Pujols with the Dominican Republic, to manage the national team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Not to say that the pair of Cardinals legends wouldnโt be a good fit for the Cardinals now, but it is a stark change from beloved player to the most scrutinized position in all of sports.
On the other hand, Marmol, despite the lackluster career record of 325-323, has handled the sinking ship well since Pujols and Molina walked out the door and into retirement in 2022. There is a point of context that is important during Marmolโs first four seasons; the roster had holes, and the patchwork signings were just enough to keep the team afloat and alive in wild-card contention long before he took the reins. There were multiple aspects of the once great organizational structure that were outdated and needed to be revamped to continue advancing in the new age of baseball. President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom made it a point to emphasize the foundation of the organization at the minor league level and on the player development side, through the whole system needed work, and began to align the Cardinals' path based on the development of young players.
While there is never any guarantee that a manager will see out the terms of his contract, Marmol and Bloom look to have a good relationship and understand the long term goals of the organization. The team did not overlook Molina or Pujols in this decision, as Molina is going to be an integral part of developing the catching inside the organization, a position that is currently overflowing with depth.
Bloom and Marmol will have to work as a team to build this the right way both in roster construction and on the field decisions, with both having trust in one another the pairing could be fruitful for the Cardinals organzation as both sides, despite the bleak hopes of contention, look forward to seeing the youth take control and usher in the new phase of Cardinals baseball.
