Cardinals closer Riley O'Brien may be mild-mannered off the field — but on it, he's a killer (St Louis Cardinals)

ST. LOUIS -- Riley O’Brien was asked an interesting question after he earned the save in Wednesday’s 5-3 win for the Cardinals over the Guardians at Busch Stadium.

Does he ever look at his numbers?

“I mean, I see ‘em,” O’Brien said casually. “It’s nice to have good numbers, but at the end of the day, I’m just trying to help the team win.”

A boilerplate answer from the unassuming figure who is blossoming into one of the most reliable relievers in baseball. The question is funny, in a sense, considering the start O’Brien has had to this 2026 season for St. Louis.

Why should he bother looking at his numbers? How hard can it be to remember zero?

Because that pretty much sums up O’Brien’s numbers so far in 2026. More specifically, it’s 0.00 -- his Earned Run Average.

O’Brien hasn’t allowed an earned run yet this season while closing out games for the Cardinals. The only run attributed to his time on the mound was a Mickey Mouse variant -- an automatic runner that came around to score in extra innings in a game that O’Brien and the Cardinals won, in part, due to his performance.

So we’re not going to hold that one against him, as O’Brien hasn’t allowed a runner placed on the bases by his own hand to come around to cross the plate.

It’s a remarkable run for a 31-year-old pitcher with little big league experience to his credit. His most substantial MLB season, by far, came in 2025, when O’Brien pitched in 42 games and logged a sterling 2.06 ERA.

Prior to that campaign, O’Brien had appeared in just 10 Major League games in his life.

But when the Cardinals traded away several key pieces of their bullpen ahead of the deadline last July, O’Brien was elevated by default into a more prominent role.

That he took it and ran with it down the stretch a year ago has led to early-season renown in the Cardinals’ relief hierarchy. O’Brien was a natural fit in a high-leverage spot heading into this season, and he’s maintained a resolute presence in the role to this point.

He’s a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities with a pair of pitcher wins and a hold tacked onto his robust resume.

“It’s nice to have the trust of the coaches and the team to put me in those situations,” O’Brien said. “I feel like pitching late in games, pitching in close games, that brings out the best in me.”

O’Brien’s rise to notoriety as the wipeout Cardinals closer presents a fascinating juxtaposition to his personality -- mild-mannered in the best of ways, Riley O’Brien just seems like a really chill guy.

That’s what makes O’Brien as the most common beneficiary of the ninth-inning Busch Stadium video lights show -- which blares Rihanna’s portion of the song ‘Lights’ while digital flashbulbs light up the stadium video boards -- a little ironic.

After all the well-intended jokes from the press box about the entrance contrasting with O’Brien’s personality, I had to ask the man himself for his thoughts on the lights show.

“It’s pretty cool,” O’Brien acknowledged. “It’s cool they’re trending in a more modern direction with that -- I know the fans enjoy it so it’s cool to hear their reaction when the lights go out.”

One reporter suggested to O’Brien that a more appropriate fit might be a Mr. Rogers-themed entrance in which the closer calmly puts on a sweater for a beautiful day in a St. Louis neighborhood -- he seemed to appreciate the concept.

But don’t get it twisted: O’Brien doesn’t need a hype song to be ready to do his job.

“I’m already pretty fired up every time,” O’Brien said. “I don’t really need too much more.”

Riley O'Brien? Fired up?

You may not know it by looking at him or from hearing him speak, but how could we doubt his claim?

The numbers tell the story -- Riley O’Brien is a stone-cold killer on the mound.
